Garden Wall Prices By Type

Wall type Typical cost per linear metre (about 1m high)
Single skin brick £150 to £250
Double skin brick £250 to £400
Rendered block £180 to £300
Natural stone £300 to £600
Dry stone £250 to £500
Sleeper wall £100 to £200

Typical UK ranges including foundations and labour, checked October 2026. Prices vary by region and access.

The 6 Wall Types

1. Single skin brick

One brick thick, about 100mm. Cheaper, but needs piers at regular intervals for stability. Fine for low walls.

2. Double skin brick

Two bricks thick, about 215mm. Much stronger, better looking from both sides and suitable for taller walls. Most front garden walls are double skin.

3. Rendered block

Concrete blocks finished with render. Cheaper materials, but rendering adds a second stage. See our rendering a house guide for render costs.

4. Natural stone

Beautiful and long lasting but expensive, both for materials and the skilled labour needed to lay it.

5. Dry stone

Traditional walls laid without mortar. A specialist skill, common in rural areas.

6. Sleeper walls

Timber sleepers stacked or set upright. Quick and cheap, but they don't last as long as masonry.

What Affects The Cost

  • Height: taller walls need more materials, deeper foundations and sometimes reinforcement.
  • Foundations: every wall needs a concrete footing. See our laying foundations guide.
  • Coping: stone or brick coping on top protects the wall and adds cost.
  • Piers and gates: piers add stability and cost. Gate openings need extra work.
  • Removal: demolishing an old wall adds labour and waste. A skip may be needed. See skip hire.
  • Access: tight access means more barrowing and more time.

How Long Does It Take?

A bricklayer can lay around 300 to 500 bricks a day on straightforward work. A 10 metre double skin wall, 1 metre high, uses roughly 1,200 bricks, so expect three to five days including foundations and coping. Use our brick calculator to estimate bricks for your own wall.

Labour Costs

Trade Day rate
Bricklayer £250 to £350
Labourer £120 to £280

Do You Need Planning Permission?

In England, you usually don't need planning permission for a garden wall up to 2 metres high, or 1 metre next to a road used by vehicles. Listed buildings and conservation areas have stricter rules. Check with your council.

Party Walls

If the wall sits on the boundary with a neighbour, the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 may apply in England and Wales. You may need to serve notice before you build. Talk to your neighbour early.

Ways To Save

  • Choose a lower wall with planting on top.
  • Use reclaimed bricks.
  • Build a block wall and render it.
  • Keep the design simple with fewer piers and curves.
  • Remove the old wall yourself if it's safe to do so.

Maintenance

Good brickwork needs very little care. Check pointing every few years and repoint where mortar is crumbling. See repointing brickwork for costs.

Choosing Bricks

The bricks you choose change both the look and the price. Standard facing bricks are the most affordable and come in a huge range of colours. Handmade and stock bricks have a more traditional, textured finish and cost more. Reclaimed bricks suit older houses and can match existing walls, but prices vary and they take longer to clean and lay. Engineering bricks are very dense and are often used below ground level or for the first few courses, where they resist damp and frost better.

Matching An Existing Wall

If you're extending or repairing an old wall, matching the brick and mortar matters. A brick merchant can often help identify a close match from a sample. Mortar colour makes a big difference too. Many bricklayers will build a small test panel so you can check the match before the full wall goes up.

What A Good Quote Should Include

Ask for a written quote that covers the foundation depth, brick type, mortar mix, coping, piers, any gate openings and waste removal. It should also say who supplies materials and how long the work will take.
